From sowing to fiber extraction, every stage of flax cultivation requires specific knowledge and careful attention to natural conditions. Understanding this process helps explain the expertise behind European flax and the characteristics of the fiber used in textile production.

Growing European Flax

Flax is generally sown in March or April and flowers in June, producing the distinctive blue flowers that characterise its fields. Around 100 days after sowing, the plants reach maturity. Harvesting begins in July, when flax is pulled rather than cut to preserve the full length of the stems. The plants are then laid in rows on the field, ready for retting.

Flax is typically grown in crop rotation, helping maintain soil quality and making it a valuable crop within European agricultural systems.

Retting: A Natural Process

Retting is the first stage in fiber processing. During this natural process, rain, morning dew and sunshine create conditions that allow microorganisms in the soil to break down the pectins that bind the fibers to the woody core of the stem.

In European flax production, field retting usually takes place between July and September. Its duration depends on weather conditions, particularly rainfall, moisture and temperature. The flax is turned during the process to encourage more even retting, as insufficient or uneven retting can affect subsequent fiber extraction.

This stage illustrates the close relationship between agriculture, climate and textile quality. Growers and scutchers work together, assessing the crop and its condition to determine when it is ready for the next stage.

Scutching: Extracting the Flax Fiber

Once retting is complete, the flax straw is collected and baled before being sent for scutching. This mechanical process separates the fibers contained in the outer layers of the stem from the woody core, known as shives.

Scutching produces long and short flax fibers, which can be used in textile and technical applications. The process also supports the use of the plant’s co-products, with shives finding applications such as animal bedding, horticultural mulch and other products.

The extracted long fibers are then hackled to align and prepare them for spinning. They can subsequently be blended and processed into yarn, with fiber selection and preparation playing an important role in the consistency of the final product.

From European Fields to Textile Yarns

European flax combines favorable growing conditions with generations of agricultural and processing expertise. The Masters of FLAX FIBER™ certification reinforces this connection by recognizing responsible cultivation practices and providing traceability of European-origin flax.

At Intercot, understanding the origin and characteristics of natural fibers is an essential part of developing quality yarns for different textile applications.

Source: Alliance for European Flax-Linen & Hemp (2026).
